CO2 grams per mile

Tailpipe carbon dioxide emitted per mile driven, measured by the EPA. Lower is cleaner.

CO2 grams per mile measures how much carbon dioxide comes out of the tailpipe for every mile driven, from EPA testing. It tracks fuel consumption closely: burning one gallon of gasoline always produces about 8,900 grams of CO2.

A typical gasoline car emits 300 to 400 grams per mile, strong hybrids dip under 200, and battery EVs emit zero from the tailpipe. The figure covers tailpipe emissions only, not power-plant or refinery emissions upstream.
