Front-wheel drive (FWD)

The engine powers the front wheels. The most common and usually most efficient layout.

Front-wheel drive routes power to the front wheels, which also steer. Packaging everything up front frees cabin space, keeps weight over the driven wheels for decent traction, and costs less to build.

It is the layout of most mainstream cars and crossovers, and usually the most fuel-efficient choice. Its limits show in high-power applications, where the front tires must both steer and put down power.

From the data: Of the 19,491 trims in the Trimslate dataset, 5,295 are front-wheel drive.
