Ground clearance

The gap between the ground and the lowest point of the chassis.

Ground clearance is the distance between the ground and the lowest hanging part of the vehicle. It decides what you can clear: speed bumps, rutted roads, snow, and trail obstacles.

Cars sit around 5 to 6 inches, crossovers near 7 to 8, and serious off-roaders above 9. Higher clearance helps off the pavement but raises the center of gravity, which is part of why tall vehicles score worse on rollover ratings.
