Horsepower (HP)

A measure of how much work an engine can do. More horsepower means quicker acceleration.

Horsepower measures how much work an engine or electric motor can do over time. In practice it tells you how quickly a vehicle can accelerate and how easily it holds speed when loaded or climbing.

A typical commuter car makes 150 to 200 horsepower, which is plenty for daily driving. Sports cars and large trucks often exceed 400. More horsepower usually costs you fuel economy, so the right number depends on how you drive.
