Towing capacity

The maximum trailer weight a vehicle is rated to pull safely.

Towing capacity is the heaviest trailer the manufacturer rates the vehicle to pull, determined by engine torque, cooling, brakes, and frame strength. Ratings range from about 1,500 pounds for cars to over 30,000 for heavy-duty pickups.

The advertised maximum usually assumes a stripped truck with one light driver; real-world capacity shrinks as you add passengers and gear. For regular towing near the limit, buyers typically step up one size class for margin.
