The basic warranty, often called bumper to bumper, covers repair of most factory defects across the whole vehicle. Typical coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first; some luxury and Korean brands stretch to 4 or 5 years.
It excludes wear items like tires, brake pads, and wiper blades, and damage from misuse. It transfers to subsequent owners, which is part of why newer used cars with remaining coverage command a premium.
